Revealed: vice-chancellor’s luxury meals, five-star hotel stays and £2.5 million house… paid for by YOU
Five-star hotels, business class flights and meals at top restaurants are the preserve of the elite, and well beyond the meagre budget of the average student.
But a month-long investigation by The Square has revealed that City University’s £280,000-a-year vice-chancellor is living a shocking luxury lifestyle – and claiming the money back from your tuition fees.
The Square can exclusively reveal how vice-chancellor Paul Curran:
- Spent hundreds on taxi journeys – many of which were less than one mile
- Wined and dined university officials at top restaurants using your tuition fees
- Splurged more than £400 on one night in a five-star Dubai hotel
- Bragged about how he has eaten his “way around the nation’s capital”
- “Sidelined and undervalued” staff at his last university
- Lives in a £2.5 million house paid for by the university, for which he claimed £620 for a new doorbell
- Has removed himself from the student body to such an extent that in a survey, only 16% knew who he was
It’s the story that the university doesn’t want you to see. Officials shouted abuse at our reporters and threatened them with police action over our investigation into the vice-chancellor. Separately, reporters were later threatened and allegedly assaulted by University security guards.
But we are not backing down. Come back every day over the next week to read about how the man paid to lead City has been brazenly taking advantage of a lax expenses system and wasting your money.

You state the VC’s salary as £280,000 but thay was 2012-13. Surely it is more now.
Still is a hefty £280,000 according to Page 23: http://www.city.ac.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0005/247865/2013-14-City-University-Financial-Statements.pdf
Have only seen him once since I started at City 2 years ago. What does he ACTUALLY do?!
