Freshers’ Diary: Thursday 22 September

:: The Students’ Union team have been live recording as hard as they can to try and drag hungover freshers out to CitySport for Last Man Standing – an event where an inflatable rotating stick tries to beat you around the legs until you give up and accept the inevitable. Naturally the psychological turmoil of the giant inflatable sisyphean task will be good preparation for anyone writing a dissertation this year. But despite regular assurances from the super keen SU team that the place was filling up, the bleachers look a little on the empty side.

:: So why, with a giant aggressive bouncy castle, live DJ and giveaways that include Nandos vouchers and six-month gym membership, is the hall not bustling with first years fighting for prizes? While a universal hangover can always be blamed this one may have more to do with the steely gatekeepers of the venue, who are only letting students with City IDs pass the gates. So freshers who want to win need only be a) resourceful enough to have picked up an ID the week before Uni starts and b) awake/sober enough to cope with the onslaught of a murderous inflatable. On a freshers’ Thursday. Good luck to all involved.

:: Anyone hoping to catch a last-minute ticket to the Masquerade Boat Ball will have to watch their aspirations sail off without them – the final tickets to the famous freshers’ finale sold out this afternoon. While we don’t advise anyone gets on a TFL river boat and sneakily swigs from a vodka-laced bottle of Fanta, it may be as close as you get to this year’s event.

:: Tonight marks the first night where CityBar gets back to normal after the flurry of freshers’ events. Nothing is planned for the on-site boozer tonight, so anyone trying to keep up the position of glory as an on-it-every-nighter will be heading out to The Clapham Grand for DJ S.K.T. Not that CityBar is so bad on a regular evening of course…
