City's top earners get more than £15 MILLION a year while VC earns TWICE as much as the Prime Minister

City’s top earning staff members rake in a staggering £15 million per year, it has been revealed.

The eye-watering sum would be enough to pay for the degrees of all of City’s Law students, a third of CASS student, or 10% of the student body.

Vice-chancellor Paul Curran – whose expense claims were exposed by The Square earlier this year – is the 37th highest-paid person in higher education.

Curran’s salary of £346,000 is twice as much as Prime Minister David Cameron and 10 times more than a Computer Science lecturer could earn at City.

The data, released under Freedom of Information laws, shows that City pays the 22nd highest sums to its top flight staff out of 157 UK universities.

While Curran is the university’s top paid member of staff, the university did not disclose the names of its next three highest earners, who earned between £284,200 and £295,800.

The news comes as students face the prospect of having maintenance grants removed as part of government cuts, making access to education harder for many poorer students.

Journalism student Alexander Corona said: “It’s outrageous when you consider what a big deal MP expenses and salaries are that these uni top guys get so much for pretty standard roles…I mean what do they actually do?”

City University has been contacted for comment.
