City’s Waterstones to shut down on Friday leaving students without a campus book shop
City’s only campus book shop is to shut down to make way for a new accessible university entrance.
Waterstones in Northampton Square will close its doors on Friday, meaning that students will have to trek a mile to the nearest store on Islington Green.
In a move that will cause anger among the City community, the university gave students just two days’ notice of the shut-down.
And the SU’s elected officers – who are paid to represent City students’ interests – gave their full backing to the closure without consultation.
A senior Union source revealed to The Square that it refused to oppose the move because “nobody goes there anyway”, and that the SU is considering setting up a book shop of its own.
In an email to students, Vice Chancellor for Research and Enterprise John Fothergill insisted that Waterstones will “continue to offer a comprehensive service” to students by hosting a pop-up shop on campus once per year.
He added: “The new entrance will be a vast improvement on the current, providing easy access to all of our students and staff.”
